Turning an Emergency-Response Cost Into a Routine, Tiered Program

When spent-solvent drums tested positive for organic peroxides, WTS replaced costly emergency stabilization with a tested, three-tier routing program, avoiding $80,000–$100,000 a year.

Client: Manufacturer shipping spent solvents

Focus: Objectivity · Compliance · Cost · Safety

CHALLENGE

A client routinely shipped drums of spent solvents for fuel blending. Several unexpectedly tested positive for organic peroxides at varying concentrations, a serious hazard, since many solvents can autoxidize into unstable peroxides under normal storage.

APPROACH

WTS helped create testing protocols and visited every two to three weeks to evaluate newly generated drums. Based on peroxide concentrations, WTS built a three-tier plan: fuel blending, incineration, or true closed-loop recycling. Each drum was routed to the right outlet instead of defaulting to costly on-site emergency treatment.

RESULT

$80,000–$100,000 in annual cost avoidance, safe and compliant management matched to each drum’s actual hazard, and a recycling path preserved wherever peroxide levels allowed.

WHY IT MATTERS

Because WTS isn’t tied to a single outlet, it could replace an expensive default, emergency stabilization, with a tested, tiered system that kept the client safe, compliant, and lower-cost.
