Rebuilding a Chemical Plant’s Waste Program Around Reuse

At LANXESS Solutions’ Perth Amboy, NJ plant, a 45-acre site producing 200+ products, WTS ran an in-plant opportunity assessment and rebuilt the waste program around source control and reuse, recognized with the ACC Responsible Care® Waste Minimization Award.

Site: 45 acres, six buildings, 200+ products

A Plan Built From the Plant Out

Working with LANXESS personnel and its network of technology and service providers, WTS ran an in-plant opportunity assessment and developed a by-product management plan aligned to the plant’s sustainability goals and compliance obligations: source controls on chemical releases, value-engineering for water and BOD reduction, and segregation of reusable and recyclable by-products.

Changing What the Plant Generates

The biggest gains came from changing what the plant generated in the first place, segregating and reusing material at the source rather than managing it as waste downstream. The same methodology extends to other LANXESS sites and chemical manufacturers pursuing zero-waste-to-landfill goals.

Why It Matters

The strongest sustainability outcomes come from rethinking inputs and outputs, not simply diverting more material, and having a network on both sides of the transaction to put recovered material to use.

THE RESULT (2019)

74,800 lbs

diethylene glycol reclaimed and reused

673,116 lbs

by-products diverted to beneficial reuse & energy-from-waste

~15%

reduction in operating expense

3,324 lbs

electronic scrap segregated for recycling
