Building a Recycling Program Where a Franchise Contract Blocked One

Locked into a municipal franchise hauler with no recycling option, a West Coast manufacturer sent recyclables to landfill, until WTS stood up an independent program that now diverts ~85% of that material each month.

Client: West Coast manufacturer

Focus: Recycling · Landfill diversion · Cost

CHALLENGE

A municipal franchise agreement required the client to use a single designated refuse company whose service offered no viable recycling option, so recyclable material was going to landfill.

APPROACH

WTS researched the local market and partnered with a separate service company able to run a full recycling program (many businesses can contract independently for recycling only). WTS and the partner ran an on-site waste assessment and stood up the program, routing paper, plastic, wood, and cardboard to a local recycling facility.

RESULT

Roughly 85% of material that previously went to landfill is now recycled each month, with both environmental and cost benefits for the client.

WHY IT MATTERS

A contractual constraint isn’t always the end of the conversation. Knowing the local market and the regulatory options opened a recycling path the incumbent hauler didn’t offer.
