Recycling 5,700 Liters of Ethanol Instead of Destroying It
Rather than destroy 5,700 liters of waste ethanol regulated as a D001 flammable liquid, WTS found a compliant recycler under two RCRA exclusions, saving about $16,000 and returning the material to productive use.

CHALLENGE
A client needed to manage 5,700 liters of 20% ethanol, waste hand sanitizer regulated as a D001 flammable liquid. Fuel blending or incineration would have been compliant, but neither reflected a preference for a more sustainable outcome.
APPROACH
WTS looked for a compliant way to keep the material in use. Two RCRA exclusions applied: commercial product substitute and the alcohol exclusion. WTS identified a specialized ethanol recycler that satisfied both and prepared the documentation to support the exclusion.
RESULT
Compliant recycling in place of disposal, approximately $16,000 in savings versus traditional disposal, and material returned to productive use.
WHY IT MATTERS
The compliant answer and the destructive answer are not always the same. Because WTS is provider-agnostic, the recommendation followed the best outcome for the material, not a predetermined disposal outlet.
